Adding new tech to analog products seems to be the one of the most profound trends today. Making people rethink how they connect to the things they use everyday, and even how those products communicate with each other; “the internet of things”.
August smart lock exemplifies what it means to seamlessly connect the internet to analog objects. August can be summarized with one phrase “You’re Invited”. The lock only lets in people who have been previously invited via a smart phone invitation. Its keyless, only requiring a smart phone and an “invitation’. You control who is allowed access, which can be changed at any time.
Book Review by typeworship : The Geometry of Type
There are many things I like about Stephen Coles’ recent book; the bright, clean design and the accessible structure allowing you to dip in and out; but most of all, it’s the lack of fluff or filler. The content has been carefully honed to focus on the important details, which is in fact what the book is all about: the details of each typeface.
In highlighting and comparing the features that give each typeface its character, anyone exploring this subject can begin to make informed choices between similar typeface options.
The pithy descriptions describe each typeface’s origin and advise what makes each appropriate for certain scenarios and where it might fail. These are occasionally laced with a subtle humour that keeps the tone of the book warm.
The great balance of written and visual explanation means the book works well as a quick reference but has a seductive way of drawing you in to read more and examine further.
Caux Collective Introduces: Sergey Shapiro
These photographs take a fantastic, up-close look at the ingenious processes of Russian Designer, Illustrator & Calligrapher, Sergey Shapiro. Whilst his wonderful logo designs are perhaps most visually pleasing at their finished stage, seeing the simplicity with which these excellently crafted typefaces are born, I feel, really adds to the creative experience.
If you would like to see more of Sergey Shapiro’s work, head over to his website, as linked at the beginning of this post, or take a look at his various other projects on Behance or Facebook.
